Understanding Ozone and Roving Blue’s Technology

Most people only know ozone as the layer in the sky with a hole in it. Or, as an air pollutant that you get warnings about.

While both are true, what most don’t realize is that when ozone is dissolved in water, it becomes a powerful, natural sanitizing solution—far more effective than chlorine.

Ozone is incredibly effective at neutralizing bacteria, viruses, molds, and other contaminants. Unlike chemical disinfectants, ozone does its job and disappears, reverting quickly back to ordinary oxygen. This makes it one of the most natural, non-chemical, and sustainable ways to purify water and clean surfaces.

What is Ozone?

Ozone (O₃) is a form of oxygen that contains an extra oxygen atom. It occurs naturally in the environment through sunlight, UV rays, and lightning.

Many people recognize the distinctive fresh smell of ozone—it’s the scent in the air after a summer rainstorm. This is because lightning produces ozone naturally.

Ozone is often called “nature’s disinfectant” because of its powerful ability to eliminate microorganisms without harmful residues. It is widely used for:

Drinking water purification

Food and surface sanitation

Odor control

How is Roving Blue Different from Other Ozone Water Purifiers?

To make ozone, you need oxygen. Most ozone generators pull oxygen from the air, using pumps and bubblers to inject it into water. These air-based systems are most commonly known as "Corona Arc" ozone generators. Compared with Roving Blue, they are:

🔹 Inefficient—They require high volatge AC electrical current

🔹 Not as Safe Most ozone escapes before dissolving into the water. See our Youtube Short showing this.

🔹 More things to mess with—Corona Arc technology require air pumps, tubes, venturi valves or airstones

Roving Blue is different. Our electrolytic ozone generators use the oxygen in H₂O itself to create ozone.

✔️ Low Voltage: Our stuff uses low voltage DC for power

✔️Simple: No pumps, tubing, or air stones required

✔️ Safer:  Ozone dissolves directly into water—minimal off-gassing

✔️ Compact and portable—ideal for travel, home use, and off-grid living

We call this “The Power of EO3™”, and it’s the new gold standard in ozone water purification.

Is Ozone Water Treatment Safe?

Yes. Unlike traditional chemical water treatments, ozone:

  • Breaks down into oxygen after use
  • Does not create harmful residues
  • Requires no consumables or chemicals

Major cities like London, Paris, and Los Angeles have used ozone in their municipal water treatment systems for decades. It’s also the method used by top bottled water companies to ensure water purity.

Regulatory approvals for ozone use include:

📌 FDA (1997): Approved ozone as an antimicrobial agent for indirect food contact - even on organic foods!

📌 FDA (2002): GRAS status granted for direct contact with food

📌 EPA: Recognizes ozone as a powerful disinfectant for water treatment

Using Ozone for Purification and Cleaning

How Long Does Ozone Last in Water?

Ozone naturally reverts to oxygen within minutes.

  • At room temperature: Ozone’s half-life is about 15 minutes.
  • In warm water: Ozone dissipates even faster
  • For drinking water purification: Wait 3-5 minutes after treatment for full disinfection

💡 Pro tip: If you can still smell ozone in the water, it is still active and working!

Can I Use Ozonated Water in a Spray Bottle?

Yes! Many customers use ozonated water for:

✔️ Sanitizing kitchen counters

✔️ Cleaning baby bottles and pacifiers

✔️ Deodorizing pet areas and gym gear

For best results, use within 15 minutes or while the ozone smell is present.

Do you have any proof of your product's effectiveness?

Many of our products have been independently tested and shown to be highly effective against common contaminants like E. coli., Salmonella, Listeria and Staph.  See  our Research and Resources page.

What is TDS, and Why Does it Matter?

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) measures minerals in water but does not indicate purity. Ozone does not remove TDS—it neutralizes contaminants without altering the natural minerals in your water.

Our products are designed to operate in normal tap water.  Around the United States this varies widely, but the range is normally 50-250 TDS.  If you have a water purification system, those make really pure water, and it is normally below 50.If your wat  er is below 50, you can add salt or baking soda to raise the TDS to above 50. Salt raises TDS. However, if you add too much, then it could go above 300, which is the level where our units do not work well. If you are unsure if our devices will work for you - get a TDS meter ahead of time - they are inexpensive and available everywhere.  If you buy one from us, we'll refund the cost of it when you buy one of our units.

💡 Fun fact: Some of the longest-living cultures drink mineral-rich water with high TDS levels.

What are the Power Requirements for Roving Blue Products?

  • Ozo-Pen®: Rechargeable battery inside, charge via USB-C
  • GO-3: Rechargeable battery inside, wireless charging pad included
  • Ozo-Pod 10, 50 and 1000: Can use both AC/DC power options

Can Your Products Be Used in Dirty/Cloudy Water?

For best results, use clear water. If using natural water sources, pre-filtering is recommended to remove debris before ozonation. Our newest product the FortiFilter, is great for this.

Does Ozone Affect pH Levels?

No. Ozone does not significantly alter the pH of your water.
